The Pulpit As A Place of Compassion

One of the things I say to our people every week at the end of services at Calvary Community Church is, “I love you.”

And one of the ways I love them is what I had done just before that statement.  Namely, the act of preaching TO God’s people is an act of love FOR God’s people.

Justin Taylor provided some wonderful affirmation today for my experience, pointing out something I’d not seen before.  The Scriptures proclaim that the act of Jesus teaching was an act of compassion:

“When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things” (Mark 6:34).

May the under-shepherds never lose sight of the fact that the call to preach is a call to compassion and love for the sheep.
