An Ineluctable Enemy

I read the following quote this afternoon while studying, in preparation to preach Luke 4:1-4 this coming Sunday (“The Temptation of the Righteous”).

Karl Barth, writing after the ravages of World War II, noted that modern Christians “pass over the reality of the devil too lightly.” :

There exists a superior, ineluctable enemy whom we cannot resist unless God comes to our aid. I do not care for demonology, nor for the manner in which it is treated in Germany today and perhaps elsewhere. Ask me no questions about the Demon, for I am not an authority on the subject! However, it is necessary for us to know that the Devil exists, but then we must hasten to get away from him.
